Raking leaves

Zack and Hailey came over last Sunday to help us rake all of the fallen leaves in our yard.  They worked really hard (especially Zack - he was hoping for a big payout!) and we filled about a dozen big garbage bags.  Even though it was a chore, we still had a good time.  We took a turkey sandwich lunch break, and then went for a walk in the neighborhood.  When we got back, we played Uno & some other games for a while, had some yummy pizza for dinner and then called it a night!

It's a Marilyn Monroe witch!

This is Seanee's pumpkin.  She carved a Marilyn Monroe witch!  It's such a cool idea, and it turned out so fantastic!!!

Vampire Martini

Halloween Recipe for Vampire Martini

Everyone loves a martini (especially one that includes champagne!) and vampires are so hot right now that we wanted to combine the two in one delicious vampire martini recipe.
 Redcandy_cocktailrimmer_1
One of the more popular Halloween martinis, here's what you'll need for the Vampire Kiss Martini:
1 part Champagne
1 part vodka, chilled
1 part Chambord
Put wax teeth in the martini glass. Pour in the vodka, top it with champagne, then pour a little of the Chambord over the back of a spoon to make it float. Garnish the rim with candy corn or blood orange slices for a creepy Halloween effect.
Follow these instructions to create the blood red effect on the martini glass!
Enjoy Planning.

The Fall-tini

This is a hot new drink for warming up on cold wintry nights.  Sounds like something I'd enjoy much better than hot apple cider in front of the fireplace!  How can you go wrong with pomegranate & pineapple??  Yum.

Getting ready for Halloween...

Yay, Halloween is on a Saturday this year!  I'm happy for all of the mamas out there who won't have to be rushing around getting costumes ready on a school day.  I hope it won't be too cold for the cute little trick-or-treaters  ~  if they have to wear coats, we can't see their costumes!!

SICK, but no SWINE

The bad news is that hubby and I have been sick all week with the flu.
The good news is that it's not the H1N1 virus!

Salon Tantrum

This is the salon where I get my hair done - Salon Tantrum. Coincidentally, the name of the girl who cuts my hair is Janelle!
We even spell it the same way.....what are the odds?
It's a very cool salon, and it's only 3 miles from home!!

Beatles in SD ~ 44 years ago!

Well, I can't honestly say that it "feels like only yesterday" but it sure doesn't seem like 44 years ago either! But 44 years ago today, my Dad braved the crowds of screeching young girls at the old Balboa Stadium by taking me and my two sisters, Jere & Jeannine along with our next-door neigbor, Evelyn, to see The Beatles.....LIVE, in concert, in person. We were excited beyond belief!!!
The entire concert lasted only 30 minutes (for Dad, hardly even worth the drive down there & the parking nightmare) and the price of a general admission ticket was just $3.50 - what a bargain! My, how times have changed.
We were all on Cloud 9 that night, even though we weren't able to hear ANY of the singing! The high-pitched screams of thousands of young girls entirely drowned out all of the music, but that didn't really matter. All we cared about was actually seeing John, Paul, George & Ringo in person! We were so lucky to have had this incredible experience at that time of our lives, and we'll never forget it.

Tonight a San Diego radio station played an original recording of that concert. It was great! It was so neat to be able to listen to it, and to re-live the memories of that night.

This is the news release for the event: The Walrus Celebrates The Beatles in San Diego Tomorrow at 5 p.m.! Forty four years ago, on August 28th, 1965, The Beatles visited Balboa Stadium for their only San Diego Concert. Thousands of San Diegans were there, and tomorrow, 105.7 The Walrus will relive the moment. "Mason in The Morning" and Frank Anthony will present a "live" Beatles Concert at 5 p.m. with a "live" broadcast from the stadium backstage. The concert features John, Paul, George and Ringo at the height of "Beatlemania" in The United States with songs like "She Loves You", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", "Help" and a dozen more. It will be presented on The Walrus commercial free. Make sure your dial is tuned to 105.7 The Walrus at 5 tomorrow afternoon. Can't get to a radio? You can always listen online at walrusfm.com.

2 favs...Diana & Barbra

This is an article about a new Streisand album coming out in September featuring Diana Krall (love her!!) and produced by Diana. I can hardly wait - two of my all-time favorite female artists together! Jazz Station - Arnaldo DeSouteiro's Blog: Krall & Streisand: "Love Is the Answer"

Remembering Dear-Ole-Dad!

Today, August 15th, marks the 9 year anniversary of my Dad's passing. In some ways, it seems like forever ago since we've been able to see and talk to him. But then most of the time, it seems like only yesterday.
No matter how much time goes by, the loss of a parent leaves a hole in your heart that can never be filled in the same way again. You don't really ever get over it, but you accept it as part of the life process, and then life goes on. How would we ever experience the joy if we didn't ever experience sorrow and grief along the way?
I'll never stop missing and will always remember.....his big, friendly smile; his welcoming arms; his hearty laugh; his generous spirit; his integrity; his strong hands; watching him make his Famous Sour Cream Pancakes with such finesse; the joy, pride and love he felt for his grandchildren; his intelligence; his never-ending patience; his charming ability to talk to anybody about anything; his enduring faith; his love of a great party with lots of family, friends, and good food; his sense of adventure in trying new things; the good times at the beach at La Salina; he and Mom's many trips to Utah to visit us as Melissa, Brian & Michelle were growing up; his lifelong support of Jere, Nini, Joni and I; his devotion and love for Grandma & Grandpa; his unconditional love of everyone in our entire extended family. The singular thing I miss the most, is the feel of a big bear hug from him. It's also the thing I most look forward to...

Corbin's Tasting

Last week I won a little contest that Corbin's Grille ran on Facebook. Since it's one of my favorite restaurants here in Layton, I was pretty excited about it. I got to go to a private food tasting -- it was really a fun experience!
This is a copy of the FB posts with the owner, Jake Garn.
Corbin's Grille Thank you so much for all the fabulous compliments. Out of all the responses I randomly selected four individuals to join us on Friday to taste and critique some new dishes for our new lunch menu!
The winners are Janelle Carlson, Kelly Burrett, Marilyn Holje, and Daneka Sorensen Ewert (check your messages)!
Thanks so much and keep an eye on our Facebook page for the next tasting invite!
Janelle Carlson This is great!! (I usually never win anything!) I'll post a review after the tasting this afternoon.

Janelle Carlson Everything we sampled was delicious, but my favorites were the Strawberry Fields Salad (would also be so good with salmon) and the grilled chicken/green chile sandwich. Yumm-O! It was really interesting to see what goes into deciding which dishes to offer on the menu. Thanks again, Jake & Co! August 9 at 9:54am · Comment · Jake Garn likes this. Corbin's Grille Thanks Janelle, it was great having you over and very nice to meet you! :-)

The Thunderbirds!

Eric and I took Zack and Hailey to the Air Show at Hill Air Force Base while Brian and Chantell were in Michigan. There was a big rain storm that morning & the show almost got cancelled. But then the sun came out and everything went as planned. (At least we weren't sweltering in the usual 100+ degree heat) The kids enjoyed the pizza, snow cones and cotton candy as well as the show! Jennifer's Wedding

Last weekend we went to Sun Valley, Idaho to attend the wedding of our friends Marty & Nyla's daughter, Jennifer. The ceremony took place in a beautiful mountain meadow, followed by dinner & dancing at the Galena Lodge. It was an awesome evening and everyone there had a great time!

Raspberry Day

On Sunday, Brian, Chantell, Tony, Zack & Hailey came over for a barbecue. Since we have about a million ripe raspberries in the yard right now, we decided to pick some. Chantell and Hailey worked together to fill Hailey's bowl.
Here's Tony getting a BIG bowl full.
Zack demonstrating the perfect raspberry!
Hailey with her bowl, which ended up overflowing when she got done.
We made delicious fresh raspberry milk shakes with them!

Celebrating the 4th with Friends

Marty and Nyla came over for a barbecue dinner on the 4th of July. We had grilled margarita chicken, mushroom risotto, a big salad (and of course, margaritas). "Eric the Margarita Master" is serving. We had a wonderful evening of great conversation & lots of laughs with our dear friends!
Nyla had a foot massage. Lucky girl!
Eric and I sharing a good laugh.

Air Show tomorrow!

Eric & I are taking Zack and Hailey to the air show at Hill Air Force Base tomorrow. Besides the Thunderbirds, there will be a lot of other planes performing in the air and others on display. Thankfully we're having really mild weather right now, so it won't be nearly as hot as past years. They're expecting nearly half a million people to attend the show this weekend!

The Secret Life of Bees

This is an exerpt from Sue Monk Kidd's website. She is the author of "The Secret Life of Bees" and she posted her impressions of seeing her book made into a movie. I'm rarely impressed by movie versions of books, but this one is awesome! It's a great story and the characters portrayed by these beautiful actresses really came to life on the screen. I loved it. ____________________________________
This photograph below was taken on the movie set of The Secret Life of Bees in Watha, North Carolina during a break between scenes. Right before it was snapped, I looked around at the female cast who had gathered behind me and felt surrounded not so much by the actresses as by the characters in the story: Lily in her beekeeping suit, looking very pleased to have landed in the pink house; August, the wise head of this female hive, her nurturing hand on Lily's shoulder; Rosaleen with a mix of strength and vulnerability on her face; June in her Civil Rights T-shirt, radiating defiance; and May in her braids with her hypersensitive heart and childlike manner.

Left to Right: Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo. Seated: Sue Monk Kidd and Director, Gina Prince-Bythewood (Photo by Sidney Baldwin).

The film will arrive in theaters soon–– Friday, October 17–– and it seems everywhere I go I'm asked if I've seen the movie and what I think about it. I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago at a small screening. I'd read the script, but sitting in the theater, waiting for the movie to start, I had no idea what I would see, whether the story and characters would come to life on the screen and feel true to the novel. I'd said before that turning over my novel to Hollywood had, at times, seemed like leaping out of an airplane, but it never seemed more so than at this moment, when the lights dimmed and the film began. Over the next hour and forty-five minutes the parachute opened and the whole thing floated beautifully to earth. I realized that not only was the adaptation true to the book, it was actually a very good film. When I saw the photograph for the first time last week, it reminded me of one of the things I love best about the movie–– its portrayal of the solidarity that binds these women and how vividly their mothering and sistering change the lives around them. I hope the photograph will be an invitation–– novelist to reader–– to see the movie with your friends, mothers, sisters, daughters, and book groups, and experience The Secret Life of Bees, as I did, in a whole new way.

Happy Hearts Day!

Over the years, Eric and I have celebrated many Valentine's Days with Marty and Nyla. When we all lived in Logan together (many moons ago) you could count on one hand the number of times each year that we would have a night out and go to dinner. We were poor, starving student families! But we always made a point of having a good time on Valentine's Day. And so the tradition continues.....
