Salon Tantrum

This is the salon where I get my hair done - Salon Tantrum. Coincidentally, the name of the girl who cuts my hair is Janelle!
We even spell it the same way.....what are the odds?
It's a very cool salon, and it's only 3 miles from home!!

Beatles in SD ~ 44 years ago!

Well, I can't honestly say that it "feels like only yesterday" but it sure doesn't seem like 44 years ago either! But 44 years ago today, my Dad braved the crowds of screeching young girls at the old Balboa Stadium by taking me and my two sisters, Jere & Jeannine along with our next-door neigbor, Evelyn, to see The Beatles.....LIVE, in concert, in person. We were excited beyond belief!!!
The entire concert lasted only 30 minutes (for Dad, hardly even worth the drive down there & the parking nightmare) and the price of a general admission ticket was just $3.50 - what a bargain! My, how times have changed.
We were all on Cloud 9 that night, even though we weren't able to hear ANY of the singing! The high-pitched screams of thousands of young girls entirely drowned out all of the music, but that didn't really matter. All we cared about was actually seeing John, Paul, George & Ringo in person! We were so lucky to have had this incredible experience at that time of our lives, and we'll never forget it.

Tonight a San Diego radio station played an original recording of that concert. It was great! It was so neat to be able to listen to it, and to re-live the memories of that night.

This is the news release for the event: The Walrus Celebrates The Beatles in San Diego Tomorrow at 5 p.m.! Forty four years ago, on August 28th, 1965, The Beatles visited Balboa Stadium for their only San Diego Concert. Thousands of San Diegans were there, and tomorrow, 105.7 The Walrus will relive the moment. "Mason in The Morning" and Frank Anthony will present a "live" Beatles Concert at 5 p.m. with a "live" broadcast from the stadium backstage. The concert features John, Paul, George and Ringo at the height of "Beatlemania" in The United States with songs like "She Loves You", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", "Help" and a dozen more. It will be presented on The Walrus commercial free. Make sure your dial is tuned to 105.7 The Walrus at 5 tomorrow afternoon. Can't get to a radio? You can always listen online at walrusfm.com.

2 favs...Diana & Barbra

This is an article about a new Streisand album coming out in September featuring Diana Krall (love her!!) and produced by Diana. I can hardly wait - two of my all-time favorite female artists together! Jazz Station - Arnaldo DeSouteiro's Blog: Krall & Streisand: "Love Is the Answer"

Remembering Dear-Ole-Dad!

Today, August 15th, marks the 9 year anniversary of my Dad's passing. In some ways, it seems like forever ago since we've been able to see and talk to him. But then most of the time, it seems like only yesterday.
No matter how much time goes by, the loss of a parent leaves a hole in your heart that can never be filled in the same way again. You don't really ever get over it, but you accept it as part of the life process, and then life goes on. How would we ever experience the joy if we didn't ever experience sorrow and grief along the way?
I'll never stop missing and will always remember.....his big, friendly smile; his welcoming arms; his hearty laugh; his generous spirit; his integrity; his strong hands; watching him make his Famous Sour Cream Pancakes with such finesse; the joy, pride and love he felt for his grandchildren; his intelligence; his never-ending patience; his charming ability to talk to anybody about anything; his enduring faith; his love of a great party with lots of family, friends, and good food; his sense of adventure in trying new things; the good times at the beach at La Salina; he and Mom's many trips to Utah to visit us as Melissa, Brian & Michelle were growing up; his lifelong support of Jere, Nini, Joni and I; his devotion and love for Grandma & Grandpa; his unconditional love of everyone in our entire extended family. The singular thing I miss the most, is the feel of a big bear hug from him. It's also the thing I most look forward to...
Here's a picture of Eric & I on a gondola ride in Venice, Italy. Below that is a photo of Dad, also on a Venetian gondola ride! (About 18 years earlier)

Corbin's Tasting

Last week I won a little contest that Corbin's Grille ran on Facebook. Since it's one of my favorite restaurants here in Layton, I was pretty excited about it. I got to go to a private food tasting -- it was really a fun experience!
This is a copy of the FB posts with the owner, Jake Garn.
Corbin's Grille Thank you so much for all the fabulous compliments. Out of all the responses I randomly selected four individuals to join us on Friday to taste and critique some new dishes for our new lunch menu!
The winners are Janelle Carlson, Kelly Burrett, Marilyn Holje, and Daneka Sorensen Ewert (check your messages)!
Thanks so much and keep an eye on our Facebook page for the next tasting invite!
Janelle Carlson This is great!! (I usually never win anything!) I'll post a review after the tasting this afternoon.

Janelle Carlson Everything we sampled was delicious, but my favorites were the Strawberry Fields Salad (would also be so good with salmon) and the grilled chicken/green chile sandwich. Yumm-O! It was really interesting to see what goes into deciding which dishes to offer on the menu. Thanks again, Jake & Co! August 9 at 9:54am · Comment · Jake Garn likes this. Corbin's Grille Thanks Janelle, it was great having you over and very nice to meet you! :-)

The Thunderbirds!

Eric and I took Zack and Hailey to the Air Show at Hill Air Force Base while Brian and Chantell were in Michigan. There was a big rain storm that morning & the show almost got cancelled. But then the sun came out and everything went as planned. (At least we weren't sweltering in the usual 100+ degree heat) The kids enjoyed the pizza, snow cones and cotton candy as well as the show! Jennifer's Wedding

Last weekend we went to Sun Valley, Idaho to attend the wedding of our friends Marty & Nyla's daughter, Jennifer. The ceremony took place in a beautiful mountain meadow, followed by dinner & dancing at the Galena Lodge. It was an awesome evening and everyone there had a great time!

Raspberry Day

On Sunday, Brian, Chantell, Tony, Zack & Hailey came over for a barbecue. Since we have about a million ripe raspberries in the yard right now, we decided to pick some. Chantell and Hailey worked together to fill Hailey's bowl.
Here's Tony getting a BIG bowl full.
Zack demonstrating the perfect raspberry!
Hailey with her bowl, which ended up overflowing when she got done.
We made delicious fresh raspberry milk shakes with them!

Celebrating the 4th with Friends

Marty and Nyla came over for a barbecue dinner on the 4th of July. We had grilled margarita chicken, mushroom risotto, a big salad (and of course, margaritas). "Eric the Margarita Master" is serving. We had a wonderful evening of great conversation & lots of laughs with our dear friends!
Nyla had a foot massage. Lucky girl!
Eric and I sharing a good laugh.

Air Show tomorrow!

Eric & I are taking Zack and Hailey to the air show at Hill Air Force Base tomorrow. Besides the Thunderbirds, there will be a lot of other planes performing in the air and others on display. Thankfully we're having really mild weather right now, so it won't be nearly as hot as past years. They're expecting nearly half a million people to attend the show this weekend!

The Secret Life of Bees

This is an exerpt from Sue Monk Kidd's website. She is the author of "The Secret Life of Bees" and she posted her impressions of seeing her book made into a movie. I'm rarely impressed by movie versions of books, but this one is awesome! It's a great story and the characters portrayed by these beautiful actresses really came to life on the screen. I loved it. ____________________________________
This photograph below was taken on the movie set of The Secret Life of Bees in Watha, North Carolina during a break between scenes. Right before it was snapped, I looked around at the female cast who had gathered behind me and felt surrounded not so much by the actresses as by the characters in the story: Lily in her beekeeping suit, looking very pleased to have landed in the pink house; August, the wise head of this female hive, her nurturing hand on Lily's shoulder; Rosaleen with a mix of strength and vulnerability on her face; June in her Civil Rights T-shirt, radiating defiance; and May in her braids with her hypersensitive heart and childlike manner.

Left to Right: Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo. Seated: Sue Monk Kidd and Director, Gina Prince-Bythewood (Photo by Sidney Baldwin).

The film will arrive in theaters soon–– Friday, October 17–– and it seems everywhere I go I'm asked if I've seen the movie and what I think about it. I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago at a small screening. I'd read the script, but sitting in the theater, waiting for the movie to start, I had no idea what I would see, whether the story and characters would come to life on the screen and feel true to the novel. I'd said before that turning over my novel to Hollywood had, at times, seemed like leaping out of an airplane, but it never seemed more so than at this moment, when the lights dimmed and the film began. Over the next hour and forty-five minutes the parachute opened and the whole thing floated beautifully to earth. I realized that not only was the adaptation true to the book, it was actually a very good film. When I saw the photograph for the first time last week, it reminded me of one of the things I love best about the movie–– its portrayal of the solidarity that binds these women and how vividly their mothering and sistering change the lives around them. I hope the photograph will be an invitation–– novelist to reader–– to see the movie with your friends, mothers, sisters, daughters, and book groups, and experience The Secret Life of Bees, as I did, in a whole new way.

Happy Hearts Day!

Over the years, Eric and I have celebrated many Valentine's Days with Marty and Nyla. When we all lived in Logan together (many moons ago) you could count on one hand the number of times each year that we would have a night out and go to dinner. We were poor, starving student families! But we always made a point of having a good time on Valentine's Day. And so the tradition continues.....

So sad! She stayed on the bed for quite a while,

Fiesta Fun

To celebrate Matt's graduation from the U last summer, Michelle had a surprise party for him at their house. He was totally surprised when he came home from work that day to a house full of family & friends! Most of our family was there (with the exception of Christian, who had to work). Melissa, Jim and Sean came up from Las Vegas, and Brian, Chantell, Tony, Zack & Hailey came from Ogden. All of Matt's family was there too. The food was awesome ~ chips & salsa, fresh guac, chorizo-queso dip, and a carne asada taco buffet. Yumm-o! All of the kids (including Kaya) had a ball playing croquet and swinging at the pinatas that we hung in the trees. The highlight of the night was watching Matt attempt to hit the pinata, after Kellie & Audrey spun him around until he was dizzy! The post below is a photo book of the party. There were a lot of laughs and some great memories made that day.....it was truly a day to remember.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY

We went to Marty & Nyla's house for the big game, and this is how they greeted us at the door! They were wearing the special 3-D glasses for the Sobe commercial. We had a great time with our wonderful friends, watched an exciting game, and enjoyed the delicious football food they prepared, especially the guacamole! (Gotta love firm avocados!)

Farewell dinner with Bruce & Janet

Since Michelle will be leaving Saturday to move to Phoenix, Matt's parents wanted to get together to tell her good-bye. So on Tuesday night Bruce & Janet treated Michelle, along with Eric & I, to dinner at Kobe Steak House. It's one of those Japanese restaurants where they prepare your food on an open grill. We had a great time watching the chef do his magic with knives & flames, and enjoyed some awesome sushi too. Bruce & Eric had a ball with the "Saki Bomb" ritual!
(We missed you, Matt!!)

100 Things I've Done in My Life (so far)

My good buddy/co-worker/trusty assistant, AMY, has been prodding me to enter posts on my blog for, well, an entire year. So I'm posting this entry in her honor. If anyone else wants to play along, please do. Just copy the list & bold the ones you've done. Unfortunately, you'll also have to delete all of the comments I have added to my list. This was fun to do, but took me a while because I've been watching "The Birdcage" at the same time. One of the funniest movies ever! From AMY's blog: I've seen this on several blogs and thought I'd play (cause I have nothing else I should be doing right now). You are supposed to copy the list and bold the ones you have done. 1. Started your own blog (Well, sort of) 2. Slept under the stars 3. Played in a band 4. Visited Hawaii (beautiful scenery, good times, great memories with family & friends) 5. Watched a meteor shower 6. Given more than you can afford to charity 7. Been to Disneyland (my 1st visit was the year they opened, I think it was in 1955!) 8. Climbed a mountain (I love hiking in the mountains here at home & on vacations) 9. Held a praying mantis (I've always been fascinated by them, and used to collect them as a kid. Even now, I get excited about finding one in the yard.) 10. Sang a solo (at a high school performance, only a couple of lines of "Guantanamera". Still embarrassing, after all these years) 11. Bungee jumped (no thanks, at this point, I don't think my heart could take it!) 12. Visited Paris (and loved EVERYTHING there--want to go back again so bad...) 13. Watched a lightning storm at sea (no, but I have watched one from an airplane over Lake Michigan at night. Very surreal and quite beautiful.) 14. Taught yourself an art from scratch 15. Adopted a child 16. Had food poisoning 17. Walked to the top of the Statue of Liberty (been there, but couldn't walk up to the top because of 9/11 security regulations) 18. Grown your own vegetables (do it every summer, but the critters always eat it all!) 19. Seen the Mona Lisa in France (it's much smaller than you expect it to be) 20. Slept on an overnight train (from Ogden to San Diego. Brian loved it, I hated it. Turned out I was pregnant, but didn't know it at the time. Couldn't figure out why I felt so nauseous on that trip!) 21. Had a pillow fight (best one ever was with my sister Jere & cousin Marsha) 22. Hitch hiked 23. Taken a sick day when you’re not ill 24. Built a snow fort (no thanks --unlike Amy, I do NOT like winter. I barely tolerate it) 25. Held a lamb 26. Gone skinny dipping (why in the world haven't I???) 27. Run a Marathon (wish I would 've when I was younger...maybe it's never too late to try?!) 28. Ridden in a gondola in Venice (SO romantic!!!) 29. Seen a total eclipse 30. Watched a sunrise or sunset (I never cease to be amazed while watching either one!) 31. Hit a home run (are you serious?! I've never made it past 1st base, quite literally) 32. Been on a cruise (Jodie's been on enough to make up for me!) 33. Seen Niagara Falls in person (planning to see it w/Mark & Vonya on a New York road trip, to include a tour of the Finger Lakes region) 34. Visited the birthplace of your ancestors (haven't yet, but want to--they're located in France, Spain, Germany, England, Norway. I would love to do a trip to one of those countries with my kids and grandkids.) 35. Seen an Amish community (in Pennsylvania...a fascinating area, fun to see the horse-drawn buggies driving down the street and perfectly groomed farms. We spent the night in Intercourse, PA. Yes, that's really the name of the town!) 36. Taught yourself a new language (French, couresy of Michelle's CDs) 37. Had enough money to be truly satisfied 38. Seen the Leaning Tower of Pisa in person 39. Gone rock climbing 40. Seen Michelangelo’s David (An extended stay in Florence is high on my to do list. We drove past the city on the Euro train in Italy, but weren't able to stop & spend some time there.) 41. Sung karaoke (had great fun doing it just last week on Christmas Eve!) 42. Seen Old Faithful geyser erupt 43. Bought a stranger a meal at a restaurant 44. Visited Africa (also on list of places to go before I die -- Out of Africa is one of my very favorite movies and the scenery is spectacular)
45. Walked on a beach by moonlight (it just doesn't get much better than that...)
46. Been transported in an ambulance (due to a little mishap driving into Dave Salas's house on Wintergardens Blvd; totalled by beloved little metallic blue VW bug) :( 47. Had your portrait painted (one of those cheap chalk drawings at Disneyland) 48. Gone deep sea fishing (a family outing in San Diego--almost everyone got sea sick!) 49. Seen the Sistine Chapel in person (absolutely incredible to really be there) 50. Been to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris (the Eiffel Tower was much more intricate & beautiful than I had expected--very impressive, especially at night when it's lit up) 51. Gone scuba diving or snorkeling (I really enjoy snorkeling, and have always wanted to scuba dive. My sisters Nini and Joni scuba dive. I think I'll try snuba first and see how that goes. I have a strange fear of having my ear drums burst while I'm 30 feet under water!) 52. Kissed in the rain 53. Played in the mud (Refer to #21 for same answer) 54. Gone to a drive-in theater (including via the trunk! Going to the drive-in was one of our favorite things growing up and there were many of them in San Diego) 55. Been in a movie 56. Visited the Great Wall of China 57. Started a business 58. Taken a martial arts class 59. Visited Russia 60. Served at a soup kitchen (ashamed to admit I haven't) 61. Sold Girl Scout Cookies (and have eaten more than my share of Samoas!) 62. Gone whale watching (Amy recommends doing this in Maui) 63. Got flowers for no reason (beautiful yellow daffodils from Eric) 64. Donated blood, platelets or plasma 65. Gone sky diving 66. Visited a Nazi Concentration Camp 67. Stood in Times Square (SO EXCITING!! Id NYC) 74. Toured the Everglades 75. Been fired from a job 76. Seen the Changing of the Guards in London (London is an amazing city, and going to Buckingham Palace is a must do, but the whole royal family thing is rather hard to swallow in my opinion) 77.
